Allison's Reviews

The Brothers Bloom - A-
(Potential spoiler)

I very much enjoyed this movie - it was perfect parts quirky, funny, clever and beautiful. I was completely immersed in the story to the point where I was actively mad at characters, angry with them, or happy for them (sometimes all three at once). I'd love to watch it again to catch the foreshadowing I missed. I did catch the line, "The day I con you is the day I die", which makes me think that I missed other great details. Also - more Joseph Gordon-Levitt, please.

The Dinner Party - B
I found this movie very interesting (as well as entertaining). I enoyed the idea of this being a play - one location and divided into acts. I thought all of the actors were very good in their respective parts. At first, I was worried I'd feel bad for Mr. Pignon throughout the movie and be unable to enjoy the humor, but I found that it was well-balanced in making him likable, pitiable and haetable all at the same time, which I think partially has to do with the actor playing the part.

The Fall - B
I actually want to split my grade up:
   - A+ for the visual part. This movie was stunning. It almost functioned as a picture book - I think that I could have followed the story without sound or words, which says a lot about the direction.
-B- for plot. I followed it and appreciated the turns and devices used, but it wasn't my favorite.
I loved how we were watching the story through the little girl's head - I think that very much added to the tone of the movie.  And how cute was that little girl?

Frenemy - D
I didn't care for this movie. I'm sure that if I thought about it more, I might like it more, but there wasn't anything compelling enough to make me want to think about it more.

Limitless - C
I was stressed out for this entire movie. Although the concept was new to me, I thought this movie was very predictable. It was hard for me to get into it when I was anticipating the next bad thing.

Moonrise Kingdom - A
Having not really seen much Wes Anderson, this movie totally charmed me. The sweetness of the love story was complimented, in my opinion, by the adultness of the children. Between that and the quirky details and artfulness of the picture as a whole (colors, cinemetography, art direction) kept this out of kids' movie territory and also out of stock chick-flick territory. It definitely made me want to see more Wes Anderson movies.

The Talented Mr. Ripley - B
I feel like I need to watch this again to really gain all that I can from it. I'd like to explore the reason that Tom first called himself "Dickie" - because that statement so early in the movie seems so telling in terms of foreshadowing. Overall I really liked this movie, but it isn't one I'll turn to on a regular basis.

Wet Hot American Summer - B
Although I think this movie was funnier when I was in college, it is still one of my favorites in this genre of comedy. I think you can definitely see how the stars of this movie got so popular.
Also, it's a good thing Bradley Cooper grew into his face. Also, also, Paul Rudd looks the same.
